SARISKA – A BRIEF TIMELINE:

1958 – Declared as a wildlife reserve

1979 – Declared as a tiger reserve

1991 – Supreme court banned mining in the area

2004 – No tiger presence, not even pug marks or scratch marks on trees

2005 – Government of Rajasthan planned the re-introduction of the Bengal Tiger

2008 – The aerial translocation of the male tiger from Ranthambore to Sariska was done by Wing Commander Vimal Raj using a Mi-17 Helicopter

2009 – A tigress was relocated from Ranthambore

2014 – Total tigers in Sasrika numbered 13, with 7 females, 2 males and 4 cubs

  • Sasrika houses the 16th century Kankwadi fort, where the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb briefly imprisoned his brother.
  • Pandupol in the hills is believed to be one of the retreats of the Pandavas.
  • The Sasrika Palace was used as the Royal hunting lodge of the Maharaja.
  • As far as tiger breeding goes, inbreeding – breeding of tigers within the same family may cause genetic disorders.
