LAKES AND DAMS

LONAVALA LAKE
This serene picturesque lake is also known as Monsoon Lake as it dries up during the winter and gets filled during the monsoon.

BUSHI DAM
Lonavala’s most famous picnic spot. During the rainy season, the dam spills over and bathing on the steps under the overflowing water is great fun

VALVAN LAKE
This artificial lake created by the Valvan dam is set alongside a beautiful garden and landscaped plains. Fed by the Kundali River, Valvan dam provides water to the Khopoli power station.

TUNGARLI LAKE AND DAM
This is another beautiful lake and dam that comes to life in the monsoon.

FORTS

RAJMACHI
What is known as Rajmachi Fort is actually two separate forts on each of the twin peaks of Shrivardhan and Manoranjan. At an altitude of 3,000 feet, Shrivardhan was mainly built to keep a watch on the Konkan area. With deep valleys on three sides and a thick forest on another, the Rajmachi fort complex is approachable only on foot and commands a magnificent view of the surrounding valley.

VISAPUR
Built on a plateau, this fort is famous for its protective walls with intricate designs.

LOHAGAD
This strategic fort was used by Shivaji Maharaj to store treasure. The huge cave outside this fort was originally used for storing grain. Inside, you’ll find a tomb, a Shivlinga, a water tank and a peculiar wall design called Vindhukata (fangs of a scorpion). Lohagad was used as a prison until 1564; in 1670, Shivaji captured the fort; and in 1751, the Gaikwad and Dabhade families were incarcerated here.

OTHER ATTRACTIONS:

RYEWOOD PARK
Close to Lonavala market, Ryewood Park is a spacious garden shaded by tall, decades-old trees.

DUKE'S NOSE
A popular trekking destination, this mountain cliff juts out in the shape of a fat nose. Maharashtra's highest peak "Kalsubai" is visible from here and it also has a temple of Mahadeo.

TIGER'S LEAP
Tiger's Leap is another cliff-top with a sheer drop of over 650 metres, giving an extensive view of the valley. There is also an echo point here where you will hear reverberating echoes of whatever you call out.

LION’S POINT
This scenic point midway between Bushi dam and Amby Valley offers excellent views of valleys and mountain passes.

EXCURSIONS FROM LONAVALA

CAVES AT KARLA, BHAJA, AND BEDSA
The three sites of Karla, Bhaja, and Bedsa near Lonavala are home to the most exquisitely carved Buddhist caves dating 200 BC and earlier. Each cave complex consists of several viharas (dwelling places of monks) and a grand chaitya (prayer hall). Stupas, lion pillars, elephant forms, images of Buddha and sculptures of foliage and dancing couples adorn these caves. The rays of the sun penetrate the dark spaces of the caves and illuminate their carved interiors.
