The Durga Puja is one of the most celebrated festivals of West Bengal, celebrated\u00a0with pomp and show. As Aashin, the seventh month of the Hindu calendar arrives; the entire state enters\u00a0into a festive mood. The celebrations are so elaborate that people from all parts of the world schedule their visits to India to witness this\u00a0spectacle. The preparations start days before this sacred month arrives. Durga Puja spans over nine to ten days, with each day holding its own importance. The last four\u00a0days are considered most sacred. The <em>Maha Puja\u00a0<\/em>(Great Ceremony) starts from <em>Maha Saptami, <\/em>the first\u00a0of these four days. Nine kinds of plants that signify 9 different Gods and Goddesses and also the 9 aspects of Goddess Durga are worshipped. This <em>Nabapatrika<\/em> (nine leaflets mostly tied together) is given a bath, prior to dawn, in a nearby lake or pond along with the <em>Kolabou<\/em>. <em>Kola<\/em> in Bengali stands for banana and <em>bou<\/em> for wife, hence the name translates into banana wife. She is considered to be the wife of Lord Ganesha by many. The stem of banana tree is draped in a new saree and is placed next to Lord Ganesha. This is called the Nabapatrika snan-o-sthapan. This ritual also asserts Durga Puja as a festival that pays homage to the ancient agrarian roots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The lanes and boulevards are later seen swarming with devotees. The entire state smells sweet, owing to the sweet preparations, and devotional music flows out from each and every household. The crowd dances to the music\u00a0and they blow\u00a0the <em>shank<\/em> (conch) to celebrate. The <em>bhog,\u00a0<\/em>a form of a<em> prasad<\/em> (religious offering) is served to the devotees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Maha Saptami is also considered as the day when Lord Ram started preparing for his legendary battle with <em>Ravan<\/em>&#8211; the ten-headed, demon king of Lanka.
