Read more to know about her tryst with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/destination\/sariska\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> jungle town of\u00a0 Sariska<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The four hour, 200 km drive from Delhi to Sariska in the Alwar District of Rajasthan is pleasant as we whiz past a patchwork of golden, green and brown fields.\u00a0 After passing Alwar city, the scenery changes to semi forest.\u00a0 As we head towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/resorts-hotels\/sariska\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tiger Heaven, a five acre Sterling holiday resort situated on the western slopes of the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong><\/a>, we see langurs, rhesus monkeys, wild boar, nilgais and peafowl.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My husband and I are being hosted by Sterling, for two days at Tiger Heaven. We draw up our itinerary for the next day and then proceed to the multi cuisine restaurant, Machan. Petromax lanterns hang from the ceiling, along with normal lighting, giving the place a rustic look. Photographs of tigers sighted in Sariska adorn the walls. The stately wooden chairs are upholstered in tiger striped fabric. The many large windows let in natural light. The restaurant can seat 40 people at a time. The food is excellent and the ever smiling F&amp;B Manager, Mr. Jagdish Kumar, ensures the guests are well fed. On the floor above the restaurant is the conference room.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6346\" style=\"width: 1150px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/natures-playground-sariska-part-i_2.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6346\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6346 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/natures-playground-sariska-part-i_2.png\" alt=\"multi cuisine restaurant Machan sarisk tiger heaven | Tent Cottages - Sarisk Tiger Heaven | A Path through Sariska Tiger Reserve\" width=\"1140\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Multi cuisine restaurant, Machan | Tent Cottages | A Path through Sariska Tiger Reserve<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At night too there is an aura of gaiety.\u00a0 We check out the tent shaped activity room where people joyfully dance to music.\u00a0 Other guests relax on deck chairs around the pool and play board games sitting on the lawn, under a brilliant star spangled sky.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As we stroll around the place we find that besides the studio rooms and the stone cottages, new accommodation has been added behind the activity room.\u00a0 These are tent cottages with the interiors tastefully and aesthetically designed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Early next morning, accompanied by Mr. Sarkar and Mr. Babu, the naturalist (guide), a 45 minute drive in a gypsy takes us to the gate of the wildlife sanctuary.\u00a0 Spread over 800 sq km, it was the hunting preserve of the Alwar royals.\u00a0 The reserve was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955.\u00a0 Since then hunting has been banned in the region.\u00a0 In 1978 it was given the status of a tiger reserve making it part of India\u2019s Project Tiger and was declared a national park in 1979.\u00a0 Sometime between July and November 2004, all the tigers had been poached \u2013 not a single tiger remained.\u00a0 In 2008 an ambitious and successful project of tiger relocation was undertaken when some tigers from Rajasthan\u2019s Ranthambore National Park were reintroduced into Sariska.\u00a0 Today the park boasts of 13 tigers \u2013 two male, seven female and four cubs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nestling in the Aravalli range, which literally means a \u2018line of peaks\u2019, the landscape of Sariska includes craggy cliffs, hills, numerous valleys, natural caves and undulating plateaus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The dry deciduous scrub jungles are rich in trees such as Dhok (Buttonhole tree) which is the dominant species, the leaves of which provide fodder for the herbivores during the summer.\u00a0 Salar (Boswelliaserrata) produces Indian frankincense.\u00a0 Karyn (Sterculiaurens) \u2013 the gum of which is used in cosmetics, food and in pharmaceuticals as a laxative.\u00a0 Gol (Indian ash tree), the bark of which is used for the manufacture of astringent.\u00a0 These are just a few of the useful trees that the forest supports.\u00a0 Thorn and bamboo thickets are also part of the forest.\u00a0 Little wonder then that the forest is home to a diversity of birds and animals.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6111\" style=\"width: 1150px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/diversity-of-birds-and-animals-in-Sariska-Tiger-Reserve.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6111\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6111 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/diversity-of-birds-and-animals-in-Sariska-Tiger-Reserve.jpg\" alt=\"Diversity of birds and animals in Sariska Tiger Reserve\" width=\"1140\" height=\"639\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6111\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Diversity of birds and animals in Sariska Tiger Reserve<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>In the second part of this series, read about Shireen Bharucha\u2019s adventures and discoveries in the heart of the forest.
