More than likely, you will encounter strange and unusual things during your travels in India. Here\u2019s a list of six unusually named train stations in the country that will leave you in splits of laughter.<\/p>\n<p><b>Chinchpokli<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located in the heart of South-central Mumbai, this station\u2019s name is an amalgamation of the Marathi words chinch (\u201ctamarind\u201d) and pokli (\u201cbetel nut\u201d). The name apparently comes from the tamarind trees that used to grow in this area. The anglicised spellings from British times (Chinchpugli\/Chinchpooghly) sound even neater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9646\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Chinchpokli-1.jpg\" alt=\"chinchpokliac\" width=\"491\" height=\"368\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Venkatanarasimharajuvaripeta<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name of this border town in Andhra Pradesh is quite a mouthful. At 28 letters, it holds the distinction of having the longest name of any railway station in India. In some cases, the prefix \u201cSri\u201d (a title for veneration) is added to the name bringing its length to a staggering 31 letters!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9647\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Venkatanarasimharajuvaripeta-1.jpg\" alt=\"venkatanarasimharajuvaripeta\" width=\"563\" height=\"374\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Kala Bakra<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kala Bakra railway station takes its name from a small village in Punjab. The name means \u201cblack goat\u201d in Hindi. We\u2019re not sure if this is a reference to the colour of goats from this region or something more sinister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9648\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kala-bakra-2.jpg\" alt=\"kala-bakra\" width=\"476\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Gubbi<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gubbi is a small town near Bangalore, Karnataka. This cute name has several different meanings in local languages. In the state\u2019s predominant language of Kannada, it means \u201csparrow\u201d. In the Konkani dialect spoken in coastal regions of Karnataka however, it means \u201cbutton\u201d. The word also means \u201cballoon\u201d in Hindi. Whichever you pick, the name is certainly adorable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9649\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Gubbi-1.jpg\" alt=\"gubbi\" width=\"495\" height=\"326\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Divine Nagar<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Divine Nagar (\u201cDivine City\u201d in Hindi) is a station in Kerala. The railway station connects to the nearby Christian mission called the Divine Retreat Center, which hosts spiritual retreats for pilgrims from around the world. The mission also operates homes for the aged, the destitute, the mentally challenged and patients who have HIV\/AIDS. It\u2019s Certainly a well-named station for a worthy cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9650\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/devine-Nagar-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"devine-nagar\" width=\"393\" height=\"221\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>IB<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IB is a junction located in Orissa and is the shortest railway station name in India. Don\u2019t misinterpret it for Intelligence Bureau!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9651\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IB-railway-station-1.jpg\" alt=\"ib-railway-station\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Erode<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This city in Tamil Nadu has two possible origins behind its name. The Tamil phrase <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eru Odai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning \u201ctwo streams\u201d could refer to the two irrigation canals Perumpallam and Kalingarayan, which flow through the city; the latter of these was constructed over 700 years ago!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9652\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterlingholidays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Erode-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"erode\" width=\"417\" height=\"313\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is another more sinister possibility which originates from Hindu mythology. The Tamil phrase Eera Odu means \u201cwet skull\u201d. The Hindu god Shiva &amp; his wife Dakshayayini were not invited to a grand <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yajna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sacrificial ceremony) organized by Shiva\u2019s father-in-law Dakshaprajapati. Dakshayayini attended the ritual regardless and was scorned and insulted by her father in front of all the dignitaries, who held a grudge against his son-in-law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unable to bear the humiliation, Dakshayayini committed suicide by jumping into the sacrificial fire. Enraged upon hearing of his wife\u2019s death, Shiva sent his forces to destroy the yajna and threw everyone in attendance into the sacrificial fire.
