3 Days in Lonavala: A Rainy Weekend the Whole Family Will Love
Last weekend, we packed our bags and headed to Lonavala with zero expectations. Just four family members, some snacks, and a hope that the kids wouldn’t fight in the car for two hours straight. What we got instead was three days of pure magic that reminded us why sometimes the best family vacations are the unplanned ones.
Picture this: you wake up to windows completely fogged over, the sound of gentle rain, and your teenager actually putting their phone down to look outside. That’s exactly what happened on our first morning at Sterling, and honestly, it set the tone for everything that followed.
Day 1: Getting Lost in the Clouds
The drive up was already an adventure. We climbed higher, watching the landscape transform from city chaos to green hills wrapped in mist. Our first stop wasn’t planned – we just saw a bunch of cars pulled over and followed the crowd.
There it was: a roadside vendor with the most amazing corn on the cob we’d ever tasted. Hot butter melting over perfectly grilled kernels while rain drizzled around us. The kids declared it better than any fancy restaurant meal, and you know what? They were right.
Khandala Point became our afternoon destination, though “point” is generous when you can barely see ten feet ahead. The fog was so thick we could have been standing anywhere, but somehow that made it more exciting. The kids played hide and seek in the mist while we parents just stood there, breathing in air that actually felt clean.
Day 2: Surprises Around Every Corner
Sunday morning brought a surprise none of us expected. Our Resort staff mentioned that yesterday’s rain had created some temporary waterfalls nearby. We grabbed our raincoats and went exploring like amateur adventurers.
Following a narrow trail, we suddenly heard it – the sound of rushing water. Around the bend appeared this gorgeous waterfall that definitely wasn’t there the week before. The kids couldn’t contain their excitement, splashing around in the shallow pools while we took about a hundred photos that somehow all looked the same.
Later, we drove to Pawna Lake, though “lake” was more like “expanded puddle” given all the rain. But the campsite nearby was buzzing with families just like us, all escaping the city for a few days. We spent the evening sharing stories with other parents while the kids ran around with newfound friends.
Day 3: Slow Mornings and Ancient Adventures
Our last day started slow. Really slow. We ordered room service, played board games by the big window, and watched the rain create patterns on the glass. Sometimes the best family bonding happens when you’re not trying too hard.
The afternoon was reserved for Lohagad Fort, though we’ll be honest – the climb was more challenging than expected with little legs in tow. But every time someone wanted to give up, the fog would part just enough to show us glimpses of the valley below, and suddenly everyone found their second wind.
The fort itself felt like stepping into a history book, but a soggy one. Our 8 year-old declared himself the “Fort King” and spent twenty minutes giving us a completely made-up tour that was somehow more entertaining than any guidebook.
The Real Magic Wasn’t in the Itinerary
Here’s what nobody tells you about Lonavala during monsoon: it’s not about the destinations you hit or the photos you take. It’s about your family huddled together under one umbrella, laughing about being completely soaked. It’s about discovering that your kids are actually pretty great company when they’re not glued to screens.
The drive back home was quiet – the good kind of quiet. Everyone was tired but happy, already planning when we could come back. Sometimes the best family vacations aren’t the ones you plan for months; they’re the ones where you just show up and let the place surprise you.
Lonavala delivered on every front: adventure for the thrill-seekers, relaxation for the tired parents, and enough magical moments to fill up our family story collection for years to come.
