Boutique owner & creative soul | Delhi | Designing with heart | Capturing moments & making them wearable | Life in threads & textures

I’ve been staring at the same fabric swatches for weeks now. Running a boutique in Delhi means constantly churning out fresh ideas, but lately, everything I sketched felt like something I’d done before. You know that creative rut where your mind keeps going in circles? That was me in July.

Then August rolled around with its moody monsoon skies, and suddenly I had this crazy urge to go to Jaisalmer. I know, I know – who goes to Rajasthan during monsoon season? But something about golden sand dunes under grey clouds just called to me. Maybe it was the designer in me craving that unexpected colour palette.

So, there I was at midnight, scrolling through hotel websites like any sleep-deprived creative does. Sterling Rudraksh Jaisalmer kept coming up in my searches. The photos showed these gorgeous carved details and that warm desert aesthetic I was desperate for. Plus, the reviews mentioned it was well-located for exploring. Done. Booked it without overthinking.

Why August in Jaisalmer Actually Made Sense

Everyone thought I was nuts going to the desert in monsoon season. But here’s the thing – August in Jaisalmer is completely different from what you’d expect. The air is cooler, there’s this romantic moodiness to everything, and the usual tourist crowds are thinner. Perfect for someone who needed space to think and observe.

Getting My Bearings

I’m usually the type who likes to wing it, but Jaisalmer felt too special to mess up. So, I hired a local guide – best decision ever. This guy knew every story, every hidden corner, every shortcut. Plus, as a solo female traveller, having someone local made me feel more confident exploring.

First stop was obviously Jaisalmer Fort. It’s literally a 10-minute walk from where I was staying, which was perfect since I ended up going back multiple times. This isn’t your typical “look but don’t touch” monument – people live here, run shops here, have been here for generations. The stonework was insane. I spent hours just studying the patterns, taking photos of the carved details. My sketchbook was filling up fast.

Desert Dreams and Monsoon Magic

The Sam Sand Dunes were about an hour’s drive away. I’d budgeted for the whole desert safari experience, which included camel rides and cultural performances. Worth every rupee, honestly.

Here’s what nobody tells you about desert safaris in August – the dunes are slightly damp, the colours are more muted, and there’s this ethereal quality to everything. The usual bright golden sand was more like brushed gold under those monsoon clouds. I couldn’t stop taking pictures. This was the inspiration I’d been looking for.

The Real Jaisalmer

Beyond the obvious tourist spots, I found myself drawn to places like Patwon Ki Haveli. The intricate facades there were like studying a masterclass in patternmaking. Every balcony, every window had these detailed carvings that could inspire an entire clothing line.

Gadisar Lake became my evening spot. Just sitting there watching the water reflect the old temples while monsoon clouds gathered overhead – it was like having a private mood board session with nature.

My Creative Retreat Base

Coming back to Sterling Rudraksh each evening felt like returning to a beautifully designed home. The interiors had this perfect blend of traditional Rajasthani elements with modern comfort. Nothing over-the-top, just thoughtfully done.

I’d usually end up by their pool in the evenings with my sketchbook and chai, trying to capture the day’s inspirations while they were still fresh. The staff there got used to me being the girl who disappeared all day and came back covered in desert dust, ready to draw until late.

What I Actually Brought Back

This wasn’t just a vacation – it turned into a proper research trip. My phone is now full of photos of stone textures, carved patterns, and colour combinations I’d never thought to put together. Muted golds, sandy browns, deep monsoon blues – there’s at least three collections worth of inspiration in those few days.

But mostly, I brought back that feeling of creative excitement I’d been missing. You know when you see something and immediately think “I have to turn this into a design”? That was me every single day in Jaisalmer.

The Unexpected Perfect Timing

Turns out, going to Jaisalmer in August was exactly what I needed. The city felt more authentic, less performative. The weather made everything feel dramatic and romantic. And having that creative pressure lifted for a few days let my mind wander in directions it hadn’t gone in months.

I’m back in Delhi now, back to the beautiful chaos of running a boutique. But my studio wall is covered with Jaisalmer sketches, and for the first time in weeks, I’m excited about what I’m going to create next.

Sometimes you just need to get lost in a golden city to find your creative voice again.
