5 Most Beautiful Beaches in Allepey

Located just 50 km south of Kochi, the coastal city of Alleppey (also known as Alappuzha) has no dearth of beautiful beaches where you can relax and take in the views. You can also head further south as Alleppey to Kovalam is only 160 km, and can be easily driven down in, or train services are aplenty too.

All these beaches in Alleppey are clean and tidy and most of them are not too crowded either.

1. Alappuzha Beach

The main beach, and the most crowded of the lot, Alappuzha beach features a pier which extends into the sea, and is over 150 years old. There is also a lighthouse nearby which makes for a great background for your panoramic photos, while a few food stalls in the vicinity ensure you are adequately stocked on snacks and cold drinks .

2. Andhakaranazhi Beach

The Andhakaranazhi beach is not as crowded as the Alleppey Beach (except during weekends and summer vacation). You can take a long stroll on this beach, and soak in the sunset, and if you are in a group, even play a game here. However, do note that water levels are erratic in this region and if you do plan on venturing into the sea, make sure you are a good swimmer.

3. Marari Beach

Located around 15 km north of Alleppey, Marari beach is surrounded by palm trees, and some of them even host a hammock where you can relax and listen to the sound of the sea! It is not as crowded as Alleppey beach, and as a result, there aren’t too many food stalls here so packing your food and drink is a great idea.

4. Pathiramanal Beach

Located on its own island in the midst of Alleppey’s backwaters, Pathiramanal beach is around 18 km from the city center and will also require a boat ride to get across (the boat services are regular though). Once on the island, you can also check out the dense forests which are home to many migratory birds and other flora and fauna.

5. Thottappally Beach

Located around 22 km south of the city center, Thottappally beach is an active fishing harbour which draws its locals here daily. The Spillway in the vicinity of the beach is a great attraction as it separates the freshwater from the Thottappally lake and the saline water at the mouth of the river draining into the sea.
