Honestly? We were exhausted. Between work deadlines and the general chaos of Mumbai life, we desperately needed to hit pause. Ooty kept popping up in conversations as friends would mention it; Instagram would show us those dreamy hill station photos, so we finally just did it. Booked three nights at Sterling Ooty Fern Hill and decided to wing it.

Best spontaneous decision ever.

Doddabetta Peak at Dawn

We’re not usually morning people, but something about being in the hills made us want to catch sunrise at Doddabetta. The road up was a bit nerve-wracking lots of hairpin turns and fog so thick we could barely see ten feet ahead. But oh my god, when we reached the top?

We literally stood there in complete silence for like fifteen minutes. The clouds were below us, the valley stretched out forever, and it felt like we’d stumbled into some secret world. My phone died trying to capture it, which was probably for the best. Some moments are meant to just… happen.

Picnic Goals at the Botanical Garden

The staff at Sterling Ooty Fern Hill packed us this amazing picnic basket (they do this thing where they ask what you like and then just surprise you). We found this perfect spot near the rose section, not too crowded, good shade, and close enough to the fountain that we could hear water trickling.

Rohan fell asleep with his head in my lap while I read. Such a simple moment, but honestly? Sometimes those are the ones that stick with you the most.

Ooty Lake Boating

I’d seen so many couples doing the cute boat thing at Ooty Lake that I was prepared for it to be touristy and overhyped. But we went around 4 PM when most day-trippers had left, and it was actually really peaceful.

We kept bumping into other boats because neither of us could figure out the steering situation, but that just made us laugh harder. The guy renting boats probably thought we were crazy, but whatever. Good memories don’t always have to be Instagram-perfect.

Getting Lost in the Pine Forest

This wasn’t even planned. We were driving back from somewhere (I think Wenlock Downs?) and saw this trail leading into these tall pine trees. Rohan just pulled over and said, “Want to explore?”

The path wasn’t marked or anything, but we followed it for maybe twenty minutes until we found this little clearing where the sunlight was filtering through in the most magical way. We sat on a fallen log and just talked about random stuff like future plans, childhood memories, whether we’d ever be brave enough to quit our jobs and travel full-time.

Sometimes the unplanned moments end up being the most special ones.

Teatime with a View

Sterling Ooty Fern Hill has this terrace area that overlooks the valley, and one of the housekeeping staff mentioned it was perfect for evening tea. She was so right. We spent like two hours there just sipping Nilgiri tea and watching the light change on the hills.

No deep conversations, no phones just comfortable silence and really good shortbread cookies. This is probably what people mean when they talk about “simple pleasures.”

The Toy Train Adventure

Okay, I’ll admit it, I was a little skeptical about the toy train. It seemed so… touristy? But Rohan really wanted to do it, and I’m so glad we did.

The journey to Coonoor takes about three hours, and every single minute is gorgeous. We went through something like 16 tunnels and over 250 bridges (yes, I counted). The best part was this older couple sitting across from us who’d been taking this same train ride every anniversary for fifteen years. Goals, honestly.

Cairn Hill Forest Walk

A staff member at Sterling Ooty Fern Hill connected us with this local guide named Murugan who knows every trail in the area. He took us through Cairn Hill Reserve Forest on what he called an “easy walk” (it wasn’t that easy, but worth it).

We saw these tiny purple flowers that only bloom for two weeks each year, and Murugan told us stories about growing up in these hills. It felt like getting a behind-the-scenes look at a place most tourists never see.

Plus, the photos we got are incredible. Nature really is the best photographer.

Surprise Candlelit Dinner

On our last night, we came back from a long day exploring to find this setup on the lawn, candles, fairy lights, and a bonfire. Apparently, Rohan had secretly arranged it with the hotel staff that morning.

The food was simple but perfect (local trout, fresh vegetables from their garden, and this amazing chocolate mousse), and we just sat there under the stars talking about how different we felt from when we’d arrived. More relaxed, more connected, more… us.

It sounds cheesy, but sometimes cheese is exactly what you need.

Horseback Riding Through Tea Plantations

Neither of us had been on a horse since we were kids, but the idea of riding through those rolling tea estates was too tempting to pass up. The horses were super gentle (thank God), and the guide stayed with us the entire time.

Rohan’s horse decided to take an unplanned detour toward a tea bush, and I laughed so hard I nearly fell off mine. By the end, we both felt like we’d conquered something major. Plus, the views? Absolutely unreal.

Three days felt like both forever and no time at all. We came back to Mumbai feeling like different people calmer, more connected, with inside jokes and shared memories that’ll probably make us smile for years.

If you’re considering a couples’ trip to Ooty, just do it. Don’t overthink it, don’t wait for the “perfect time.” Just book something cozy (Sterling Ooty Fern Hill was amazing for us), pack comfortable shoes, and be open to whatever happens.

Some of our best moments weren’t the ones we planned, they were the random conversations, the wrong turns that led to beautiful views, the quiet mornings with good coffee.
