Celebrating The Pride Of Kerala On World Elephant Day
A global celebration dedicated to protecting the mighty Asian and African elephants, International Elephant Day is but a reminder of their dwindling population. August 12th serves as a reminder of our role in preserving these majestic indigenous creatures and their home. Progressively, the world has seen a loss in their habitat and a depletion of resources, which has meant that their survival is constantly at risk. With their main threat being poachers, it is predicted that elephants could go extinct in the next couple of decades without our collective efforts. That is why World Elephant Day calls us to protect the elephants and their habitats.
But why do we celebrate World Elephant Day?
World Elephant Day was initiated by the efforts of Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims to raise awareness about the plight of elephants. Today, Elephant Day celebrations are global, with many people taking to social media to advocate for elephants and their issues. While Sims continues to lead efforts, this annual event is now recognised and celebrated by over a hundred wildlife conservation organisations, working tirelessly to save this vulnerable species.
If you are wondering how to celebrate World Elephant Day with your family, we suggest a trip to the forests of Kerala, home to one of the three recognised Asian elephants subspecies. Thekkady, and the Periyar National Park, are known for their many elephant camps. Here, tourists can come and interact with elephants. You can also feed and bathe them with their caretakers, and spend a few hours connecting with nature. The Periyar forest’s dense evergreen trees are also the perfect getaway from the urban jungles, making it a top recommendation for wildlife enthusiasts.
Once done with your World Elephant Day activities which include jungle safaris, trekking, and plantation tours, you can spend the day relaxing at Sterling Thekkady, a beautiful property on top of a hill overlooking the Western Ghats. Each room at Sterling Thekkady offers a mesmerising view of the evergreen Idukki hills.
