Something like magic happens to Udaipur when the monsoon comes. The city of lakes, already beautiful in its antique palaces and glinting waters, seems to have been newly painted by nature itself. The Aravalli Hills become green, clouds hover low over the lakes, and secluded valleys ring with the music of rain-fed streams. If you’ve ever wondered what makes monsoon in Udaipur so special, it’s not just the weather—it’s the way every corner comes alive.

During my last visit, I reached just in time for the first rains to pour over the city. The lanes reeked of moist earth, the lakes overflowed with reflections, and the entire area was softer, quieter, almost clandestine. In a couple of days, I stumbled upon spots that seemed run-of-the-mill in summer but stand-out during the rains. Here are my seven preferred ways of exploring Udaipur during monsoon—each one giving me a memory that I’ll treasure forever.

  1. Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary – Where the Aravallis Come Alive

Sitting at the foot of the Monsoon Palace is the Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary, which becomes a whole other world once the rains come. Paths here are bordered by dense foliage, streams run across stone paths, and peacocks prance in the rain. I recall standing frozen as a spotted deer crossed soundlessly just in front of me, its fur shining against the rain-scoured landscape. For nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers, it is one of the finest locations to inhale Udaipur’s monsoon freshness.

  1. Phoolon Ki Ghati – The Valley of Flowers

Secluded from the maddening crowd, Phoolon Ki Ghati (Valley of Flowers) really comes alive during the monsoon. A withered stretch now becomes wildflower carpets—pinks, whites, and yellows dancing in the gentle breeze. I visited with a local friend who informed me that folks tend to bring little picnics here. Perched on a rock, rain falling overhead, surrounded by flowers—it was Udaipur’s little secret, kept only for the adventurous souls who are willing to stray from the beaten tourist paths.

  1. Rayta Hills – For Cloud-Touching Views

If you wish to experience Udaipur from up above, Rayta Hills is where it’s at. The journey itself is breathtaking—twisted roads, dripping trees, and occasional glimpses of the lakes down below. By the time I had reached the summit, I could hardly spot the city because clouds hovered so low, within arm’s reach. It’s a destination for those who adore silences interspersed with the wind only, and for photographers, the foggy vistas are gold.

  1. Ubeshwar Ji – Peacefulness in the Rains

Nestled amidst the Aravalli hills, Ubeshwar Ji’s temple is a spot that is at once holy and picturesque. The road leading to it during the monsoon is lined with miniature waterfalls, and the temple tank brims with clean rainwater. I recall seeing families light torches, their shadows flickering on the damp stone floors, while kids played in the rain. It was a combination of piety and plain monsoon bliss that seemed ageless.

  1. Alsigarh Waterfalls – Udaipur’s Secret Cascad

For a dose of the unbridled monsoon energy, take a trip to Alsigarh. The waterfall here plunges furiously in the rains, blowing cool spray into the air as it hits the rocks below. I walked down a slippery track with locals who informed me that they come here simply to get out of the city heat. Standing near the falls, soaked, I felt tiny but alive—a testament to how rain is able to convert even the most rugged terrain into something so beautiful.

  1. Monsoon Palace – Witnessing the Storms Roll Over the Lakes

No Udaipur monsoon is complete without a trip to the Monsoon Palace. Constructed high atop a hilltop, it used to be the royal retreat to monitor the rains. The scenery is unparalled—you can see Fateh Sagar Lake, Lake Pichola, and the urban sky line, all glistening under floating clouds. I arrived as the sun pierced through after a rain shower, lighting up the entire horizon with a golden glow. It was one of those times when you just stand there and allow the quietness to consume you.

  1. Lakeside Evenings in the City

While the waterfalls and hills grab the attention, nothing can replace a quiet evening by Udaipur’s lakes in the rains. Raindrops create ripples on the water, tea vendors place steaming cups of masala chai, and palaces glimmer softly in the clouds. I was at Lake Pichola one night, being offered roasted corn by a stranger, smiling both of us at the impromptu drizzle. It’s these small moments that make Udaipur not to forget in the rains.

Experience Monsoon the Udaipur Way

The beauty of Udaipur in the monsoon is not about grand plans, but about slowing down. It’s about watching clouds curl over the Aravallis, tasting hot snacks by the lakes, and finding hidden gems that only reveal themselves in the rains. Whether you’re wandering through wildlife trails, chasing waterfalls, or just soaking in the city’s charm, Udaipur in the monsoon feels like a gentle pause from everyday life.
