Shani Shingnapur: The Lockless Village Guarded by Lord Shani
A small village in Maharashtra, Shani Shingnapur is popular for its temple of the Hindu god Shani, associated with the planet Saturn. It is also famous for the fact that no house has a door there!
Lord Shani is the son of Lord Surya, the Sun God. According to Hinduism, Lord Shani gives us benefits for our actions - as you sow, so shall you reap. He is an unbiased judge and therefore feared.
The Swayambhu Shanishwara's statue at the temple in Shingnapur was found by shepherds a long time ago. It is believed to have existed since the start of Kali yuga. A black stone, with traces of iron, is worshipped here as Lord Shani.
As the legend goes, Shani appeared to a villager and announced his presence. But try as they might, the villagers could not move the stone. When they tried digging it out of the ground, the depth seemed endless. When they built a shrine around it, the ceiling fell. Lord Shani appeared once again and gave instructions for just a foundation to be built around it.
The shrine at Shani Shingnapur is thus a unique one, where the black stone representing Shani stands on a platform, open to the skies. Another unique facet of this temple is that the Lord is always available for worship, at any time of the day or night. The temple is never closed. The village here is also unique in that none of the houses or shops have any doors, and thus, no locks.
While the rest of the world has electronic surveillance, Shingnapur has Lord Shani protecting them.
