Sakleshpur Travel Experiences Through Coffee Estates, Western Ghats and Historic Forts
Most people who've heard of Karnataka's coffee country know Coorg and Chikmagalur; Sakleshpur, quietly growing its own beans an hour or two from both, tends to get skipped. That's slowly starting to change, and it's easy to see why once you're actually here: Hassan district's hills sit at just under 1,000 metres in the Western Ghats, plantations of coffee, cardamom, and pepper cover practically every slope, and the whole area still runs on a rhythm set by harvest season rather than tourist season. A three-hundred-year-old fort, a pilgrimage temple, and a rainforest viewpoint make up the essential places to visit in Sakleshpur, but what actually holds a visit together is the quiet in between them.
That quiet is easiest to find on foot, and there's a longer list of things to do in Sakleshpur once you start looking past the obvious three stops. Manjarabad Fort, an octagon-shaped structure Tipu Sultan had built above Donigal in the 1790s, is worth the climb for the Ghats views alone. From there, the road runs on to Bisle Viewpoint, set inside a forest reserve so thick with birdlife and rare species that people have started calling it India's Amazon, with sightlines out to the Pushpagiri and Kumaraparvatha ranges on a clear day. Pilgrims head instead to Kukke Subramanya Temple, a centuries-old shrine to Lord Subramanya regarded as a sacred abode of the nagas, while a different kind of traveller sets off on the Green Route railway trek, a stretch of abandoned track cut through dozens of tunnels and bridges in dense forest. Closer to the resort itself, a walk to Coco Falls or an afternoon paddling the Hemavathy River rounds out a relaxed day of Sakleshpur sightseeing without much driving at all.
None of that, though, is really the point of coming here. The pull is the stay itself: a sunrise walk through coffee estates before breakfast, a turn on the zipline and rope course, a plate of Malnad-style food by firelight once the sun goes down. Sterling Kadumane Hills Sakleshpur, a small 14-acre retreat reached by the resort's own signature 4x4 jeep ride, was built around exactly that idea for a Western Ghats getaway: put the fort, the viewpoint, and the temple circuit within reach, then give guests every reason to leave their phones behind and not bother with any of it.
