Marudhamalai: War Gods and Wandering Druids

In Hindu pantheon, Muruga is revered as the Lord of War. Muruga is said to have six war camps atop different hills in Tamil Nadu. One such is in Marudhamalai in Coimbatore, about 30 km from Anaikatti. The temple was built in the 12th century and inspires much religious fervour in its devotees. This is where He is said to have destroyed the demon Soorapadman and his brothers Tarakasura and Simhamukha.

One can either drive to the top or climb the steps carved out of the rock face. On special days and festivals, the air rings with the cries of ‘Harohara’ as devotees make their way to pay obeisance to the Lord of War. Pushya star in the Tamil month Thai (between Jan 15 and Feb 15) is considered auspicious for this deity. Devotees pierce their tongues with miniature spears and dance in frenzy, electrifying the atmosphere.

There is a cave shrine in this temple complex, built to resemble the mouth of a serpent, dedicated to Pambatti Siddhar. Siddhars were traditional healers, well versed in Ayurveda. They wandered the woods lived in caves in these hills, including Marudhamalai. The two water bodies in Marudhamalai - Madura Theeratham and Pambatti Sunai - are said to have strong medicinal properties.  The surrounding forests are rich in medicinal herbs too.
