Kodachettu: A Forest Made by Man

11 km from Yercaud is a picturesque teak forest. The Vaniyar River passes through this jungle and leads to the Vaniyar Dam. The forest is unusual because teak trees do not grow naturally in the area. Here is how it came to be:

Hill tribes lived and farmed by the Vaniyar River, till a deadly plague drove them away. The area lay abandoned for a long while. Then, years later, the government took up this land and raised a teak forest with ample help from nature. Gradually, the forest gave rise to its own ecosystem: today it is home to many animals.

Walking through Kodachettu is a great way to see wildlife up close. Deer, anteaters, rabbits, squirrels, mongoose, hares and foxes move around with nary a glance at the bipeds trekking through the woods. The majestic bison though, does stop and cast questioning looks. As long as there is no ambiguity about who owns the forest, these interactions are peaceful.

The trek is a photographer’s delight. The light filtering through the tall trees, the stillness of the air, the incredible beauty of the surroundings and, most of all, the freedom from the madding crowd make this a popular spot for shutterbugs.

Kodachettu must feature in every traveller's wish list.
