Jungle Safari: Answering the Call of the Wild
A trek followed by a safari into the jungles - Munnar has more to offer than just a view of tea plantations! With birds and wild animals aplenty, a jungle safari through Munnar's forests is an exhilarating experience.

What comes to mind when you think of Munnar? Vast expanses of tea estates, of course! But forests are also an integral part of Munnar. Set against the manicured tea estates, the looming forests strike a mysterious note, and it can be an exhilarating experience to visit them. The starting point of this Jungle Safari is the scenic village of Poopara. With help from local guides, set off to the first destination, a cardamom plantation bordering Bodi in the neighboring Tamil Nadu. The walk through the plantation is perfect for birdwatchers. You can hear the song of the Nilgiri Whistling Thrush and sight the Laughing Thrushes, Treepies, Woodpeckers, Barbets, Sunbirds and a host of other beautiful birds.
The exciting safari begins after this walk. The air is thick with expectation because at every turn there’s a chance to spot wildlife. Once you do, the sight of a magnificent Sāmbhar Deer or a massive Tusker is beyond description.
Even if you don’t start sighting animals right away, following elephant tracks or coming across freshly-stomped earth creates a palpable suspense that is sometimes as good as an actual sighting. There is a thrill in anticipating what lies ahead - a herd of elephants with babies or a lone tusker.
As the safari ends, you are bound to be yearning for more. This jungle safari is not just about the sighting of wild animals and birds, but the entire experience of being in the wild, away from the shackles of city life.
