Trekking in Munnar: Scaling the Heights
Trekking on some of the highest peaks of South India attracts a different genre of travellers. Anaimudi and Meesapulimalai loom above the other peaks, daring the adventurous to scale their peaks.
Towering at 8661 feet above sea level, Meesapulimalai is the third highest peak in the Western Ghats. Mere numbers don't do a good job of describing this stairway to the clouds. Seen from a distance, the peak looks perfectly conical, almost like a child's illustration of a hill. But at closer quarters, the imposing slope is appreciable.
The trek begins at Kolukkumalai, a place known for its British-era tea factory; the highest in the world. The jeep from the resort drops trekkers off at the Sunrise Point, which is an ideal place to be welcomed by the molten light of dawn.
The trek is quite demanding and can leave one breathless. But the scenic route makes up for it all. The rough grass underfoot sports frost. Deep tracks left by the bison are visible. Nilgiri Tahirs graze on the distant precipice and majestic kites roost in their nests. And all the while, the altitude provides a sweeping panoramic view of the world below.
Some of the treks are gruelling and should not be attempted by those without prior trekking experience. Beginners should start with an easier climb.
