Merchula: A Feast for the Senses

Corbett is a series of picturesque picnic spots. The Corbett waterfall especially cries for a picnic hamper and good company.

Merchula: A Feast for the Senses

There is much to recommend a good picnic and even more to advocate one at Corbett. The area has picnic spots that are postcard pretty and cry out to be enjoyed at leisure. One such spot is the Corbett Waterfall; good food, great company and the lulling rhythm of gently cascading water - this is the kind of place that inspires memoirs.

The vast riverbeds of Ramganga, in the upper reaches of Corbett around Merchula, also make for beautiful picnic spots. The river can look muscular and threatening during the monsoons but becomes friendly and pliant during the winters. While the barbeque sizzles and spits by the riverside, one can wade around in the transparent waters, throw pebbles in it or, just sit quietly and watch a couple of thirsty animals drink their fill.

In the times of instant coffee and Instagarams, adrenaline-inducing activities have large followings. Picnics however belong to the cult of the true travellers, driven neither by itinerary nor perception but by their own inherent sensibilities.
