Corbett: Revisiting Platitudes
Villages in the region reflect the increasing conflict between man and beast. In times of unchecked consumption and depleting resources, walking these villages is a way to wake up and smell the coffee.
The villages that contribute to the economy of the Corbett region live, quite literally, on the edge. They are constantly at odds with the animals as they both draw from the same ecosystem to sustain themselves. These villages are full of stories that reflect the increasing conflict between man and beast.
Many villagers have now given up regular farming as deer and wild hogs ravage their field. They now deal in cash crops such as mangoes and many of them work as guides for the tourists visiting the area.
Getting one such guide is a good idea while walking the villages in search of stories. The best place to begin is at Merchula, where the walk becomes a mini-trek thanks to the natural altitude. A good guide can make the place come alive. He can point out the watering holes of the tiger, the fruits that local women use to make vermilion or the herbs that locals use to cure ailments.
Trekking through these villages is not just an exercise in absorbing local culture. It is also an opportunity to revisit development platitudes and reflect, as travellers often do, on the direction mankind is heading in.
