Punnathur Kotta Elephant Sanctuary

Shiny black crows gorge on bright mangoes, jackfruits burst, walls turn moss green and the glittering sunshine pass through the monsoon drops brightening the ivory tusks. As you walk into the Punnathur Kotta Elephant Sanctuary which is a kilometre away from Sterling Guruvayur, the immodest green of the surroundings will pave the way into a palatial view of the majestic fort - red, old and ancient, the home of aorund 60+ majestic tuskers belonging to the Guruvayur Temple.

Temple elephants are treated with much respect and care here. And at this sanctuary, you can see them in action - basking in the sun, bathing happily in the pond and having their ears scrubbed and nails cut as they play with the branches of tiny trees near the pond.

A pachyderm’s paradise, this place will remind you that elephants are a jumbo deal for Malayalis.
