A Hilltop of Quiet Power
Tucked away in the serene Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand, Kasar Devi Temple is a modest shrine with a legacy that spans centuries—and dimensions. Dedicated to Goddess Durga, it is believed to mark the sacred site where Kaushiki Devi defeated the demons Shumbh and Nishumbh, as told in the Devi Bhagavata Purana. Behind the temple, a natural rock formation is said to bear the impression of her lion mount—an enduring reminder of the divine energy said to reside here.

Beyond its spiritual aura, Kasar Devi is also associated with a rare geomagnetic phenomenon. Scientists have noted that the area falls under a gap in the Earth’s Van Allen Radiation Belt, where the planet’s magnetic field exhibits unusual strength and clarity. Only two other places in the world—Machu Picchu in Peru and Stonehenge in England—are said to share similar geomagnetic properties. While the science continues to be explored, many visitors report feeling a deep sense of stillness, clarity, and introspection here.
This sense of calm is what first drew Swami Vivekananda to Kasar Devi in the 1890s. His meditative experience left a profound impact and opened the path for other seekers. Over the following decades, the hill attracted mystics like Lama Govinda, Walter Evans-Wentz, writers like D.H. Lawrence, and counterculture icons such as Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, and George Harrison—all drawn by the energy, the silence, and the possibility of transformation.
Even today, Kasar Devi continues to call out quietly to travelers, thinkers, and spiritual explorers. Whether you're drawn by its mythology, its natural beauty, or the intangible energy it radiates, this hilltop offers more than just a view—it offers a moment of stillness in a noisy world.
