Enchey Monastery: Where the Solitary Flying Monk Lived
There is a lot of history and folklore behind the Enchey Monastery, a significant religious centre in Gangtok.
Around two centuries ago, the Enchey monastery was built around the then small hamlet of Gangtok. An exponent of tantric art, Lama Drupthob Karpo is said to have flown into and blessed the spot over which the monastery was eventually built and lived there as a hermit in a solitary hut. 'Enchey' means solitary, and that is how Enchey Monastery came into being at this spot. Over the years it has become a religious centre.
Locals believe that Guru Padmasambhava, the patron saint of Sikkim, had invoked the protective spirits of Kanchendzonga, Yabdean, and Mahakala and solicited their presence within the temple here. Some even say he has trapped them here. Devotees throng Enchey to seek the blessings of these spirits.
The Enchey Monastery comes alive during the Cham Dance Festival held annually in January. Young and old monks alike wear colourful masks and dance to the music of trumpets and drums. The cultural event is a photographer's delight.
