Cemeteries: Where History Rests in Peace
Reading epitaphs can be akin to reading the history of a place. The picturesque cemetery at Lal Tibba and that at Camels Back are Landour’s history.
The Christian cemetery lies on the way to Lal Tibba, the highest point in Landour. There is little to suggest its presence by the roadside except, the nondescript gate with an even more inconspicuous signboard. An occasional tombstone does peep down from behind the pine tree but not in a manner that attracts attention. The deathly quiet of the place brings alive the phrase - Rest in Peace.
Many of those who lived and loved in the Mussoorie of yore are buried here. People are not allowed in but, those who do manage to talk their way in should look for the simple grave of Eugenie Catherine West. She was the first Superintendent of the Christian Training School and Orphanage that began with just two pupils in a rambling house; it went on to become the famous, Wynberg Allen School.
There is another cemetery at Camels Back road. It is in less scenic surroundings, but the dead there are better known. Alfred Tennyson in his poem, "The Charge of Light Brigade", immortalized 600 soldiers who charged into Russian guns during the Crimean war, thanks to a misinterpreted command. Only a 100 survived; John Hindmarsh was one of them. He is said to be buried at the Camels Back Road Cemetery.
The infamous 19th century adventurer, Fredrik (Pahari) Wilson, who amassed a fortune by trading timber around the Garhwal region and settled at Harsil in Uttarkashi district, was also buried here.
