Kazimar Big Mosque

Said to be the first Islamic place of worship in Madurai city, Kazimar Big Mosque was built in 13th century by a descendant of Prophet Muhammad, Hazrat Kazi Syed Tajuddin who had visited the city from Yemen.

Kazimar Big Mosque

This land was given to him by the then King Kulasekara of the Pandyan Dynasty. Almost all of Tajuddin's descendants have lived in the same locality (Kazimar Street) for more than 700 years and the family has managed the mosque.

An architectural treat, this mosque is definitely worth a visit when in Madurai.
