St. Mary’s Cathedral, Madurai, also known as the Church of Our Lady of Dolours, is one of the most popular churches not only in Madurai but also in Tamil Nadu. Built in 1841, St. Mary's Cathedral is more than 180 years old. Initially this church was built as a small chapel and was expanded multiple times with the rise of the Christian population in the area. In 1938, when the Madurai Diocese was established, St. Mary's Cathedral was bestowed with the status of a pro-Cathedral and the Bishop’s throne was also brought in to the church. However, it was only in 1969 that this church got the status of a Cathedral. This cathedral is the seat of the Madurai Roman Catholic Archdiocese.
The Cathedral has incomparable architectural beauty – built in the Roman style. The stand out feature of the Cathedral has to be the twin bell towers that stand at a height of 42 metres. The façade however is truly the most instagrammable part of the Cathedral.
